About Marti (@MartiGCummings): I grew up on a small farm in Maryland and fell in love with the musical theatre after seeing a local production of Annie. As a kid, I would mix my love of Broadway and the royal family to create stories and put on shows for my family. Cut to years later when I moved to the big apple at 17 and got into the drag comedy scene after appearing in the off-Broadway show “Twist.” I’m excited to brag that I’ve come a long way baby… and my NYC cabaret concerts are constantly sold out and through my talk show I have interviewed hundreds of Broadway stars and shared the stage at my shows with over 20 Tony Award winners and nominees. Giving back and standing up for what I believe is so important and I’ve used my platform as a drag performer to promote awareness for many LGBT charities including The Ali Forney Center, GMHC, The Hetrick Martin Institute, and Bailey House. I am also the founding president of The Hell’s Kitchen Democratic Club which is leading the resistance in NYC.
About Mike (@MikeKelton): I’m the Executive Producer of “Shade: Queens of NYC”. Host/Creator at MTV & LogoTV and comedian performing regularly at the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre in NYC. I live in Brooklyn with my boyfriend and our dog, Curtis. I love so many things but recently I've been loving Curtis the most. A close second is the cast of this incredible show who inspire and make me laugh every day. I hope you like our show and I would love to chat with you! For More: http://www.mikekelton.com/

how does clearing music for documentaries work -- can you get cheaper or free "fair use" rates because it's a documentary?
we have the best music supervisor EVER! you may know him from the film tangerine! he works super hard to make sure we get the best music for our show and he makes sure we get the proper rights and clearance for each musical performance! his name is Matthew hearon smith - check him out guuuuuurl
What is the very best cheese?
mike says havarti - duh -
How did you choose the cast?
Hey Andrew - GREAT QUESTION! We organically got the cast through Marti's suggestions of a diverse group of Queens and also, his friends!
What would you most like to tell us?
I would most like to tell you guys about the behind the scenes of the show because I think it's super interesting....

-Mike
I would most like to tell you guuuurls about the fun the queens and I have together during the show!
-marti
are you a bot?
no I'm a drag queen - marti
What has been the most difficult part of filming the show in terms of opening up your lives for the world to see?
now that the show is on the air and we are still filming it is super weird to see ourselves and see other queens and their reactions to what we do. we really work hard to show all of who we are and we try to be our authentic selves. for personally it is hard being very newlywed and navigating our relationship on camera.
I totally know what cheese your talking about Marti. Gramma makes it every Christmas!
Ok, so Tina was super shady to Brita about her aesthetic being sloppy, and I think Brita is busting her ass all over this city making sensational things, and then Brita was a shady about Tina's makeup at that diner, and SO is that editing or do they not get along? Drama fills my soul.
Good question...All the things said in the show are real and not produced. But you are only seeing snippets of peoples lives so it's good to keep in mind that this is a community and shade will be thrown but at the end of the day most of these girls are super tight and genuinely love each other. I know that is the case with Tina and Brita.
I don't live in NYC. Is there a national drag queen community? How would you recommend folks outside of the city get connected.
Marti says:
Every city has it's own unique Drag community and culture. With that said, the power of the internet is super strong and you can find video's pics or links to your fav queens right here on the internet! You can find your Drag community anywhere!
Are all drag queens bottoms?
there are a lot of drag tops. drag is not a sexual position it is a fun character. Drag is art. sex is fun. so. some queens are tops. some are bottoms. some are verse. some are gay. some are straight. some are men. some are women. some are trangender. drag has no boundaries.
Are there any music artists that you would never cover? And/or, is there someone you’ve been dying to cover but haven’t yet?
We are open to covering really any musician as long as they are not a threat to our community...like Kid Rock.
We also want to highlight new and indi artist that are tearing it up. We want to promote young artist that have a bright future.
How much input do the queens have in what is filmed and what is shown?
Every storyline is is inspired by talking to the Queens about life events, personal issues, family struggles and then we talk about how to capture that and then we do.
Will anyone get eliminated this season?
nobody bb. The is a docu-follow show, not a competition show. We are grateful for this.
How do people come up with their drag names? And why don't you have one Marti?
I don't have a drag name because my parents gave me the name 'Marti' as a baby and growing up, people would continuously tell me that I had a woman's name. I faced a lot of shit for it so when I started doing Drag I decided to OWN THE POWER OF MY NAME and keep it BABY!!!
Marti, do u think doing this show will change your life and how?
I think this show already has changed my life. This show has given me the opportunity to get to know 7 other drag queens on a deeper level...and it's a great way to connect with other queens. It has given each of us a platform...even after the first show, I had so many messages of people asking me how to get involved politically so it feels like we are already making a change.
Marti- Can you tell me a little more about the mission of The Hell's Kitchen Democratic Club?
the hells kitchen democrats is here to bring progressive issues to the forefront and ensure the people in our community of hells kitchen in our city, state, and nation are taken care of. we are working hard to make sure progressive candidates are elected and holding current officials accountable.
Are you going to show how a tuck is done?
I don't think it is shown but it is talked about and you see them getting ready backstage so I'm sure there are moment when they are doing it.
