UPDATE: Sorry guys I have to get ready for a screening tonight. Thank you for all you questions it was fun. If you haven't already seen it please check it Backcountry!
where did you find a bear?
We got them from an excellent wrangler in BC. We couldn't find any really big ones in Ontario so we decided to go looking in other parts of Canada. When we found them we were so happy because they were about 600 pounds each! I wanted an intimidating bear and we got them for sure.
I'm a huge fan of Backcountry and want to make films of my own eventually. What kind of budget did you have to work with on Backcountry?
Thank you so much! We worked really hard on it. All I'll say it definitely wasn't the big hollywood budget that's for sure. And we only and 16 days to shoot it
Any plans to work with other dangerous animals? Lions and tigers perhaps?
ha! good question. You know I do have a script I have working on called Wolf at the door. so I would say yes a WOLF. One of my favourite animals.
what is next for you?
I have a couple things going on right now. I wish I can tell you. I'm very exited about these next potential projects, I was hired to rewrite one that I can't wait to shoot.
That's the spirit. I feel like you should've started with that. Work your way up to the bear. Why the fascination with such dangerous and awesome animals?
Predatory animals fascinate me. The power they have when you encounter them can change you life in an instance. I find them majestic and spiritual
I had the pleasure of seeing Backcountry when it premiered during a horror film festival here in NYC. I loved that it was such a survival driven story and the "horror" was secondary. I have been floored by Missy's work on Rookie Blue from the start. What was it about her work on that show that made it clear to you that she could be Jenn in the ways you created that character?
I always thought she was good but then Enuka who plays Tracy told me to watch her emotional scenes and I did and I was floored. There was one scene were Ben Bass' character breaks up with her and the way she balanced strength and vulnerability was mind blowing. I thought the perfect combination for Jenn. She was amazing!
Any advice for an English Teacher who also teaches High School TV production with one camera?
Hi, all I would say is to nurture the students and let them explore their creativity. Art is arbitrary and their is no right or wrong way to do things. Guide their inspiration.
Why a bear and not a serial killer of hiding in the woods?
I feel there are scarier things then serial killers in the woods
What kind of bear is the best?
I'm pretty fond of the "spirit" Kermode Bear. And hey who dean't love a good Kuala bear?
You said you're Canadian but all Canadians I've met were very sensible people and wouldn't mess with a bear. Do you ever think you might be Australian or something?
ha! funny you said that because I'm very inspired by some Australian films. They have balls big time! From MAd MAx to the REEF. They have made some great films dealing with their predatory animals. I wanted to do it in Canada, with ours.
O the Kermode Bear is really cute! o.o
no doubt!
absolutely!! That break up scene was remarkable and so insanely believable.. All kinds of emotion in the span of a couple of minutes. Missy and Ben Bass have something pretty incredible when they act opposite each other,. In Backcountry a lot of it was Missy acting against herself/the circumstances and she delivered an insanely incredible performance.
I couldn't agree more. She's a warrior
Hey Adam. Loved Backcountry! Proud of you buddy. Have you seen Wolf Creek? Great Australian horror flick. Also, we should probably work together soon. Miss you pal.
heyyyyyyyyyyy! Yes I have love that movie and would love too.
