UPDATE: This has been great! Thank you for your questions. I have to hop off now and I'm airport bound to try and get ahead of the expected blizzard.
Keep asking questions and I’ll get to them once I’ve landed. Wish me luck!
Wrong. The correct answer is buy my book
I love your sense of humor. Okay, then, buy my book! ;)
When the shootings occurred in Ottawa at the Canadian parliament, CBC and CNN's reporting was drastically different.
Do you have any comments in regards to this? Does CNN base their reporting only on hunches rather than facts and apologize afterwards?
I sit in on the network’s editorial meeting everyday. I have been doing it for 15 years. We never report on hunches.
did you ever consider adoption ?
Yes. Because even before i delved into fertility, I was already looking at adopting due to my involvement with charities. Because it had become so advanced, and I wanted that last shot at trying to have a child that was biologically mine, I gave it a try and it worked.
What advice would you give someone starting out in their career wishing to work in investigative journalism?
Constantly enterprise and bring ideas to your boss. Especially ideas/investigations that have never been done before. You will stand out.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
My amazing and hilarious children. And golf, when I can get out on the course.
How about training and education? Would you recommend going the traditional route of a journalism degree, internships etc or rather simply starting writing?
Hands on internships are key. Absolutely start writing and submitting. Journalism degree is a huge positive depending on the school. Think hands on experience, always.
Thanks very much!
You are so welcome.
If you could take a trip anywhere in the world where would you go?
I have never been to Egypt. I have always wanted to cruise down the Nile.
Is there a fertility diet?
Yes, there is and we lay it out in my book. In particular, good fats and bad fats because your BMI is very important when wanting to conceive.
Who would you say was your best interview? And if a different answer - your favorite interview to do?
Mother Theresa. Memorable interview. What really stuck in my mind was that she went beyond the interview, and told me as a young girl that my purity was the most important thing to keep. I don't know if that's TMI, but i never forgot that.
In your opinion, what are the biggest positives and negatives of news reporting for a major media outlet in the 21st century?
Oh wow. The biggest positive is the impact you can still make. The biggest negative is having to edit a really great interview - what do you cut?!
How do you feel journalism/reporting will progress going forward? There are so many different people now reporting news online. Amateur journalists are dominating the field, and it's becoming easier and easier for these people to find outlets that will publish their work. With social media there is an even bigger chance of them being shared/noticed throughout the web.
How do you plan on competing with these writers *and staying relevant?
That's such a great question. I know i think about that every day. And it just makes me more focused on my writing, and looking for unforgettable characters in my stories.
As a journalist what do you make of the criticisms of Mother Theresa? Namely from writers like Christopher Hitchens.
Mother Theresa's journal entries were powerful and genuine. Even those with the strongest faith always question.
After watching the constant coverage of the events in the Middle East, I was wondering how reporters cope with being in the middle of a very unpredictable area. Have you had any experiences like this, and if so, how did you go about doing your job in a safe manner?
I had four tours in Iraq and we had an unbelieveable security team, AKE. And we also had war training before we went over the pond.
How many times will you suggest someone to read your book during this ama?
As many times as I think is appropriate ;)
What prompted you to reveal your personal journey?
I really wanted to empower women of all ages, because there wasn't any book out there to tell us what we could do differently to impact having a family.
After your microphone was famously left on while you went to the restroom and talked about your family, did anyone working on the soundboard get in trouble?
Everything worked out peacefully.
How long did you struggle with infertility and what worked for you? Did you eve feel like giving up? If so how did you get past the hard days?
It took me two years and two miscarriages. And no, I never gave up. I was determined to keep trying until my doctor told me I couldn't try anymore.
I'm 33, never been pregnant but would like to be in the near future. Based on your research, when would it be too late to try?
It all depends on your body, but at the age of 35 your chances of getting pregnant decrease to about 53%. I suggest freezing your eggs if you are not ready to get pregnant now.
How did you go about writing a medical-related book as a non-medical professional?
How long did it take you to write it?
I co-wrote it with my doctor, Jamie Grifo, for that exact reason. I wanted to make sure that it was the best and newest information.
What is a story you didn't get to cover that you wish you could have?
I had always wished I could be the first journalist to go up in space in a NASA Shuttle. I really wanted to touch the heavens.
Do you ever wonder why the Obama administration loves cnn and msnbc but hates fox news? Also, you're pretty.
I've never heard the President say he hates any network. Can you tell me when and where he said that? Thanks for the compliment.
